Why does Anki cost money on iPhone?

Why is the same app $24.99 in the US App Store and €29.99 in the German one?

Four things this answer does not establish
First, the license of AnkiMobile is not documented. Neither the product page in the App Store nor docs.ankimobile.net nor apps.ankiweb.net makes a statement on it; the two documented licenses apply to Anki Desktop and AnkiDroid, so this article calls AnkiMobile neither open source nor proprietary.
Second, the Anki manual names no storage limit in megabytes for AnkiWeb; a megabyte figure stands there only for the self-hosted sync server.
