Formula
Pmax and Rd in μmol CO2·m−2·s−1 · I and Ek in μmol photons·m−2·s−1 · α in mol CO2/mol photons
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Net CO2 uptake at irradiance I | μmol CO2·m−2·s−1 | |
| Asymptotic maximum gross photosynthetic rate in this hyperbolic model | μmol CO2·m−2·s−1 | |
| Photosynthetic photon flux density | μmol photons·m−2·s−1 | |
| Characteristic saturation irradiance Pmax/α | μmol photons·m−2·s−1 | |
| Light respiration, approximated as a constant subtraction | μmol CO2·m−2·s−1 | |
| Initial slope of gross light response, the quantum efficiency | mol CO2/mol photons |
P_{net}=P_{max}\frac{I}{I+E_k}-R_d,\quad E_k=\frac{P_{max}}{\alpha}This is a simple rectangular hyperbola for gross rate; net uptake subtracts Rd. Ek=Pmax/α is the irradiance at which gross rate reaches half Pmax. The approximation assumes constant parameters, no photoinhibition at very high light and controlled temperature, CO2 and water conditions. Real leaves may show a nonrectangular curve, dark rather than light respiration, or a decline under excess light; fitted parameters are not universal.
Simple model without photoinhibition and with constant parameters and controlled CO2, water and temperature.
More photons initially raise gross assimilation; at saturation other processes limit the rate.
Rearrange for irradiance
Denominator must be positive; Pnet+Rd is below Pmax.
Pmax=20; α=0.040; Rd=1; I=500. Calculate Pnet.
Ek=500 and Pnet=20·500/(500+500)−1=9 μmol CO2·m−2·s−1.
Extrapolating the light curve as unbounded or declining at any high irradiance.
This rectangular hyperbola saturates asymptotically; photoinhibition needs another function.
Formula cluster
α sets the initial slope at low light and Pmax the asymptote at high light.
With Pmax=20, α=0.040 and Rd=1.0 μmol CO2·m−2·s−1, Ek=20/0.040=500 μmol photons·m−2·s−1. At I=500, Pnet=20·500/(500+500)−1=9 μmol CO2·m−2·s−1. Check: gross rate is half maximum at I=Ek; subtract Rd afterward.
Compare light limitation, saturation and net assimilation in leaf or algal measurements
Here is how to work through a typical Photosynthesis Light Response and Saturation (Pnet = Pmax·I/(I + Ek) − Rd) task step by step:
Task
Pmax=20; α=0.040; Rd=1; I=500. Calculate Pnet.
Solution path
Ek=500 and Pnet=20·500/(500+500)−1=9 μmol CO2·m−2·s−1.
light dependence of net CO2 uptake up to saturation. Its output is a net assimilation rate per leaf area and time.. α sets the initial slope at low light and Pmax the asymptote at high light. The quantity answers a specific biological or statistical question, not automatically the full cause of an observed pattern. Tie it to the population, sample or model level from which inputs came. A number without that reference can be misleading across studies. Keep description separate from explanation: the metric summarizes data but does not by itself establish the underlying mechanism.
Use I is photon flux, Ek saturation scale, Rd respiration and Pmax gross maximum. The units are I and Ek use photon units; CO2 flux parameters share CO2-area-time units.. Check that numerator and denominator refer to the same time interval, target population and scale. Proportions entered as percentages usually need conversion to values between zero and one. Write units and definitions beside the observations. This helps catch swapped groups, mismatched age intervals or a wrong denominator before they distort the result. Also document measurement definitions and preprocessing, because studies can operationalize the same symbols differently.
The central assumption is: temperature, water status and CO2 stay controlled during light measurements. photoinhibition at high irradiance is absent from the simplified hyperbola. If very high light damages photosystems or light respiration is not constant., interpretation changes or the formula no longer fits. State sampling, measurement method and biological scale. A model is useful because it simplifies a question, but its limits belong in the report. Do not automatically transfer parameters to different species, populations, laboratories or sampling conditions. Report these assumptions with the result so readers can judge which populations and conditions the conclusion can cover.
In the example, Pmax=20, Ek=500 and Rd=1 at I=500 give Pnet=9. The check is: gross response is half-maximal at I=Ek and Rd is then subtracted. Substitute calculated values back into the original relation and check whether ranges and units are biologically plausible. Rounded data can create a small discrepancy, but should not change direction or order of magnitude. Also test a simple limiting case, such as zero, complete detection or equal groups. This separates arithmetic errors from model limitations. Round intermediate values only at the end, and check the order of magnitude against the biological question.
A nearby quantity is maximum PSII quantum yield. The substantive distinction is that PSII yield is a fluorescence/photosystem metric; this page models CO2 assimilation versus light. Both can appear in the same biological analysis, but they use different inputs and answer different questions. Choose by the requested output and verify the data definition before comparing values. A related name does not imply identical units or interchangeable interpretation. This matters when a descriptive statistic is reported alongside a model parameter. Before comparing values, align definitions, populations, observation periods and analysis rules; otherwise the difference may be methodological.
