Formula
V̇CO2 and V̇O2 use the same molar or volume-rate units under identical normalization; RQ is dimensionless
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Respiratory quotient for the metabolic process considered | dimensionless | |
| V̇CO2 | Cellular CO2-production rate | mmol/min or L/min |
| V̇O2 | Cellular O2-consumption rate under the same unit and reference conditions | same unit and reference conditions as V̇CO2 |
RQ=\frac{\dot V_{CO_2}}{\dot V_{O_2}}RQ is a ratio of metabolic fluxes at the site of cellular metabolism. Complete carbohydrate oxidation gives a stoichiometric value near 1; pure fatty-acid oxidation is lower, and mixed substrates or protein metabolism change it. RER is instead measured from CO2 output and O2 uptake at the mouth. RER and RQ approximately agree only in metabolic and ventilatory steady state; hyperventilation, acid buffering and changing CO2 stores can separate them.
Cellular CO2 production and O2 consumption refer to the same metabolic state and comparable reference conditions.
The quotient connects oxidation stoichiometry with the ratio of produced and consumed gases.
CO₂ production
Use matching reference conditions and flux definitions.
VCO2=0.20 L/min and VO2=0.25 L/min. Calculate RQ.
RQ=0.20/0.25=0.80; a cellular RQ is not automatically the measured RER.
Reporting lung-measured RER as identical to RQ without steady state.
RQ describes tissue metabolism; RER measures mouth gas exchange and can differ with CO2 stores and ventilation.
Formula cluster
complete carbohydrate oxidation gives a stoichiometric RQ near 1.
Complete glucose oxidation, C6H12O6+6 O2→6 CO2+6 H2O, gives RQ=6/6=1.00. Cellular fluxes of 0.20 L CO2/min and 0.20 L O2/min also give 1.00 if both are normalized to the same temperature, pressure and humidity conditions. Check: numerator and denominator have the same unit, so the ratio is dimensionless.
Interpret substrate oxidation and indirect calorimetry in physiology and metabolism
Here is how to work through a typical Respiratory Quotient (RQ) (RQ = V̇CO₂ / V̇O₂) task step by step:
Task
VCO2=0.20 L/min and VO2=0.25 L/min. Calculate RQ.
Solution path
RQ=0.20/0.25=0.80; a cellular RQ is not automatically the measured RER.
the ratio of cellular CO2 produced to O2 consumed. Its output is a dimensionless value related to the oxidation mixture.. complete carbohydrate oxidation gives a stoichiometric RQ near 1. The quantity answers a specific biological or statistical question, not automatically the full cause of an observed pattern. Tie it to the population, sample or model level from which inputs came. A number without that reference can be misleading across studies. Keep description separate from explanation: the metric summarizes data but does not by itself establish the underlying mechanism.
Use VCO2 is cellular production and VO2 cellular consumption; both fluxes need the same unit. The units are molar or volume rates are valid when temperature, pressure and humidity are normalized alike.. Check that numerator and denominator refer to the same time interval, target population and scale. Proportions entered as percentages usually need conversion to values between zero and one. Write units and definitions beside the observations. This helps catch swapped groups, mismatched age intervals or a wrong denominator before they distort the result. Also document measurement definitions and preprocessing, because studies can operationalize the same symbols differently.
The central assumption is: the fluxes represent the same metabolic state and substrate oxidation is being balanced. the organism is near steady state with no large short-term CO2-store change. If hyperventilation or bicarbonate buffering separates expired-gas ratio from cellular quotient., interpretation changes or the formula no longer fits. State sampling, measurement method and biological scale. A model is useful because it simplifies a question, but its limits belong in the report. Do not automatically transfer parameters to different species, populations, laboratories or sampling conditions. Report these assumptions with the result so readers can judge which populations and conditions the conclusion can cover.
In the example, glucose produces six CO2 per six O2, a stoichiometric RQ of 1. The check is: equal 0.20 L/min rates in numerator and denominator yield dimensionless ratio 1. Substitute calculated values back into the original relation and check whether ranges and units are biologically plausible. Rounded data can create a small discrepancy, but should not change direction or order of magnitude. Also test a simple limiting case, such as zero, complete detection or equal groups. This separates arithmetic errors from model limitations. Round intermediate values only at the end, and check the order of magnitude against the biological question.
A nearby quantity is RER, the respiratory exchange ratio measured at the mouth. The substantive distinction is that RQ is metabolically defined, whereas RER is a measured lung gas ratio and agrees only at steady state. Both can appear in the same biological analysis, but they use different inputs and answer different questions. Choose by the requested output and verify the data definition before comparing values. A related name does not imply identical units or interchangeable interpretation. This matters when a descriptive statistic is reported alongside a model parameter. Before comparing values, align definitions, populations, observation periods and analysis rules; otherwise the difference may be methodological.
