What is a LaTeX editor?

LaTeX is the standard format for mathematical and scientific formulas, used by universities, research institutes and technical publications worldwide. An online LaTeX editor lets you write formulas like E = mc^2, the Schrödinger equation or integrals directly in the browser and see them rendered instantly.

How do I export LaTeX formulas?

You can download the rendered formula as a PNG (high resolution, @2x for retina displays) or copy the LaTeX code directly. Alternatively, paste it into Quanta flashcards to learn the formula efficiently with the FSRS algorithm.

Newton's Second LawF = m \cdot aThe multiplication dot is \cdot. An asterisk in LaTeX sets an asterisk, not a multiplication sign, and a bare x is typeset as a variable.

Where the editor stops

Four points you are better off knowing beforehand.

  • KaTeX is a renderer for mathematical typesetting, not a TeX distribution. Drawings with tikzpicture, figures, bibliographies and page breaks belong in a full LaTeX setup, not here.
  • The editor shows one formula at a time. For a whole problem sheet it is the wrong tool.
  • Flashcards are only built from a formula that exists in the Quanta formula sheet. A formula you typed freely has no description, units, application or source behind it, and without those the back would be empty.
  • Rendering happens in the browser. What you type into the field is not sent to a server.

From the formula to a flashcard

With a formula from the formula sheet in the field, you get a whole study block instead of a single flashcard. Newton's Second Law yields 10 flashcards: the formula itself, its units, one card per variable, plus its application, a worked example, its range of validity, its derivation and a rearrangement for another quantity.

The formula sheet behind the editor holds 133 formulas from physics, chemistry, maths and biology, each with a source and a worked example. The flashcards are then studied with FSRS-6 (Ye et al. 2022, ACM SIGKDD).

Yes, if the formula exists in the Quanta formula sheet. It then yields a whole study block in one go: the formula, its units, one flashcard per variable, plus its application, a worked example and its derivation. A formula you typed freely has none of that behind it, so the button stays away there. The PNG export works either way.
