Formula
N prey/area · a area/(predator·time) · h time/prey per predator · f prey/(predator·time)
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Prey consumed per predator and time at prey density N | prey/(predator·time) | |
| Predator attack or search rate | area/(predator·time) | |
| Prey density | prey/area | |
| Mean handling time per captured prey item | time per prey per predator |
f(N)=\frac{aN}{1+ahN}The hyperbola rises approximately linearly at low N and approaches 1/h at high density. It represents encounters plus time spent handling prey when the predator cannot search. The simple model assumes constant parameters and independent search; satiation, prey switching, predator interference, refuges and prey behavior can alter the curve. Unlike Lotka–Volterra equations, this is a per-predator functional response, not a coupled population-dynamics model.
Attack rate and handling time are constant and search/handling follow the simple saturation model.
Encounter rate rises with prey density, but handling time limits the maximum consumption rate.
Rearrange for handling time
Algebraic rearrangement; N, a and f must be consistent.
a=0.02 m2/(predator·day), h=0.5 day/prey, N=100/m2. Find f.
aN=2 and ahN=1; f=2/(1+1)=1 prey/(predator·day).
Interpreting 1/h as a system-wide rather than per-predator rate.
f is per-capita consumption per time; multiply by predator abundance only for total consumption.
Formula cluster
f approaches 1/h at high N rather than growing without limit.
Let a=0.02 m2/(predator·day), h=0.5 day/prey and N=100 prey/m2. Then aN=2 prey/(predator·day), ahN=1 and f=2/(1+1)=1 prey/(predator·day). Check: at very high density, f approaches but cannot exceed 1/h=2 prey/(predator·day).
Describe saturating consumption in predator–prey models and experimental ecology
Here is how to work through a typical Holling Type II Functional Response (f(N) = aN / (1 + ahN)) task step by step:
Task
a=0.02 m2/(predator·day), h=0.5 day/prey, N=100/m2. Find f.
Solution path
aN=2 and ahN=1; f=2/(1+1)=1 prey/(predator·day).
per-predator feeding rate that saturates at high prey density due to handling. Its output is prey per predator per unit time.. f approaches 1/h at high N rather than growing without limit. The quantity answers a specific biological or statistical question, not automatically the full cause of an observed pattern. Tie it to the population, sample or model level from which inputs came. A number without that reference can be misleading across studies. Keep description separate from explanation: the metric summarizes data but does not by itself establish the underlying mechanism.
Use a is attack rate, N prey density and h handling time per prey. The units are aN has consumption-rate units; ahN is dimensionless, making the denominator consistent.. Check that numerator and denominator refer to the same time interval, target population and scale. Proportions entered as percentages usually need conversion to values between zero and one. Write units and definitions beside the observations. This helps catch swapped groups, mismatched age intervals or a wrong denominator before they distort the result. Also document measurement definitions and preprocessing, because studies can operationalize the same symbols differently.
The central assumption is: search and handling times dominate the saturation mechanism. prey interference, alternatives and refuges do not greatly change parameters. If predators switch prey or handling depends on density or prey size., interpretation changes or the formula no longer fits. State sampling, measurement method and biological scale. A model is useful because it simplifies a question, but its limits belong in the report. Do not automatically transfer parameters to different species, populations, laboratories or sampling conditions. Report these assumptions with the result so readers can judge which populations and conditions the conclusion can cover.
In the example, aN=2 and ahN=1 give f=1 prey per predator per day. The check is: at very high density the limit 1/h=2 is approached but not exceeded. Substitute calculated values back into the original relation and check whether ranges and units are biologically plausible. Rounded data can create a small discrepancy, but should not change direction or order of magnitude. Also test a simple limiting case, such as zero, complete detection or equal groups. This separates arithmetic errors from model limitations. Round intermediate values only at the end, and check the order of magnitude against the biological question.
A nearby quantity is the Lotka–Volterra predator–prey equations. The substantive distinction is that Holling gives consumption per predator versus N; Lotka–Volterra couples population sizes. Both can appear in the same biological analysis, but they use different inputs and answer different questions. Choose by the requested output and verify the data definition before comparing values. A related name does not imply identical units or interchangeable interpretation. This matters when a descriptive statistic is reported alongside a model parameter. Before comparing values, align definitions, populations, observation periods and analysis rules; otherwise the difference may be methodological.
